What is HCR Cares?
HCR Cares (formerly Home Care Research of Rochester) is a non-profit 501(c)3, community-funded agency, incorporated in 1978 by a grant from Louise Woerner, CEO of HCR. The agency conducts research and educational activities which help focus attention and advance knowledge of key factors related to independent living.
Current Projects
Nursing Scholarships
HCR Cares continues to grant scholarships to home health aides who want to further their careers by becoming LPN’s or RN’s. HCR Cares provides scholarship recipients with mentors throughout their time in school to assist with time management, study skills and tutoring. The mentoring significantly helps with the success rate of the students. Home health aides must be employed with HCR for one year to be eligible for a scholarship. Aptitude testing and an interview with the HCR Cares Board of Directors are required. To learn more about HCR Cares’ Scholarship Program, call 585-272-1930.

A Highlight of Achievements
Project S.H.A.R.E.D. (Social Health Approach to Reinforcing Effective Disease Management)
Project SHARED was a unique collaboration, started in 1998, between two health care agencies and two social service agencies, HCR Cares, HCR, Catholic Family Center and The Health Association, to develop the self-care capabilities of individuals, families and systems within the community.
Project SHARED enabled over 5000 individuals from two, low-income, inner city neighborhoods who were at-risk for diabetes, hypertension, obesity or asthma, to better manage their chronic ailments and to us the health system more effectively. The success of Project SHARED has provided the design for producing a national model for social health delivery.
Health Leader Series
HCR Cares has co-sponsored many educational series, developed by scientific experts and health leaders, to promote good health in the community. Practitioners, health care organizations, government agencies, private industry, and consumer groups have learned about the practical benefits of scientific research and innovative strategies that underlie the nation’s best health practices.
Bringing opportunities to the Rochester community on advanced scientific practice and innovation, guarantees Rochester will continue to remain a national model for our health care system, and ensures our community will receive the best care possible.
Good Food!
In conjunction with the Junior League of Rochester, HCR Cares held nutrition and cooking sessions for women overcoming barriers of self-sufficiency. During the seminar, volunteers and members of a targeted population prepared inexpensive meals with nutritionally revised recipes to teach women good nutritional habits. The project continues today at the Sojourner House.
How is HCR Cares funded?
Donations are received in the form of memorial gifts in honor of accomplishments of individuals throughout the year and annual fund drives are also held. For specific projects, grants are sought from various organizations in the community.
